Well.. all I can say about this movie is that it’s now my favourite! My only issue with the movie was that Penny (played by Amanda Bynes who I adore!) doesn’t get to talk enough. I know it’s based on a musical, but she could still have spoke more. Otherwise it’s a great movie with a very strong message about a number of issues that we still face today (even though it’s set in the 60’s), and the music is great. I especially love the ending with “You Can’t Stop The Beat” and John Travolta’s dancing. I give it a 9 out of 10!
And I agree - I just love the movie, even if it was a little slow to begin with. a 9 out of 10 for me too….
I’ve just returned from the movies after seeing “The Golden Compass”, based on the book by Phillip Pullman.
I found the movie quite enjoyable, if a little slow. The trailer that we had viewed on DVD led us to believe the movie would be a faster pace.
The overall plot of the movie is about a young lady called Lyra, who sets out on a quest to save her friend from the “Gobblers”. Her quest however, brings her head to head with the Government of the world she lives in, as they are responsible for the Gobblers kidnapping children.
Without providing too many spoilers, Lyra’s starts out on her adventure with Mrs Coulter (played by Nicole Kidman). After discovering Mrs Coulters secret, Lyra flees and ends up in the Far North of her world, where she meets a Ice Bear (voiced by Ian McKellan), a flying Cowboy (well played by Sam Elliott) and a witch named Serafina Pekkala (played by Eva Green).
The story does not end with the Golden Compass, and I believe that there are plans to make the second book in the trilogy (The Subtle Knife) into a movie. However, the end point of the Golden Compass is logical and leaves you with a feeling of completion, whilst letting you know that there is more to come.
There has been a lot of controversy about the Golden Compass and it’s “anti religion” sentiments. I can’t comment for the other two books as I haven’t read them yet (I do intend to) however, I struggled to find the anti-religion sentiments.
I hadn’t heard much about this movie until last week when I saw a trailer on a DVD and mentioned it to my children (both of whom go to a Christian School). My 11 year old daughter was quite vocal about not wishing to see the movie. This position was based on the “anti-God” sentiments that some of her by her friends had told her the movie espoused.
We are parents who firmly believe that you should have your own opinions (yes, even if they differ from your parents) and that these opinions should be based on personal experience and / or personal education, as much as possible. Having satisfied ourselves that the movie was G or PG rated, we insisted that our daughter accompany us to the movies and make her own mind up.
When I got home this afternoon, I googled the movie and checked out what the stir was about. All I could get out of the movie was that the Magisterium (the ruling body of the world) appeared to be much like any other dictatorial or fascist organization or government that tells people what to think and how to act, and punishes them for not thinking or acting the way they should.
However, I also encourage my children that if they feel that their faith is challenged, to remember that faith is up to them and what they believe. It doesn’t matter whether what they believe is scoffed at or ridiculed by others, it’s within themselves. Sometimes challenging faith only strengthens it.
Anyway, aside from that, I think the movie is great and a good view.
I’ve recently signed up for two “game download” sites as a reward for my children. I have to say it was with great trepidation I did so. I have heard so many negative things about these site - you download viruses, the quality is dreadful etc etc etc.
That’s why I chose the two sites I did. Both of these sites allowed me to download games prior to purchase and test them. Both sites had clear statements about the “cleanliness” of their downloads.
An interesting side effect of signing up to these two sites, is that my Husband and I can both play games as well. It’s been an interesting weekend, as we both decided to download something to play.
The two sites I choose:
Real Arcade - offers a Game Pass at $10 a month. For that fee you get a free game every month and a discount of $5 on every other game purchased. The Game Pass is free for the first month and you get to keep your free game if you don’t renew it. The range of games offered is fantastic.
BigFish Games - Offer a free game download every day. You get to try out the game before you buy it. I got hooked on Paradise Pet Salon and spent most of Sunday playing it. This site lets you choose your membership level as well to meet your budgetary needs. Visit the site to check out the other great offers as well.
If you like to kick back and play PC games, then these two sites are well worth visiting. Download a few games, try them out and then decide to join the clubs.
With the increase in the speed of Internet connections available to most households, it has become extremely easy for many of us to download full version movies from the comfort of our own home.
We really no longer need to go the DVD store to buy or rent a DVD - we can just as easily download the movie we are after, right to our computer. With the extra advances in technology that we have experienced, it is just as easy to burn the movies to a DVD so you can watch it on your TV, or you watch it on your PC, or you can download it to your portable device and watch it anywhere!
The advantages to a user of downloading movies are obvious. The Variety and the freedom to choose our full version movie downloads are almost endless. A search of the InterNet found over 82 million WebPages, many of them offer to download full version movies for free.
The disadvantage is that the amount of offers you are presented with could be overwhelming. Like going into a huge toy store and try to decide which toy you want to buy. That wouldn’t be so bad, especially when you are presented with so many free offers. “Toys you can get for free”…. BUT all that “free” stuff offered across the net could be very dangerous for your computer’s safety.
Downloads from an unknown sources could carry viruses and spyware that could attack your computer and cause great damage.
Another issue that must be addressed and to many of us ignore is the violation of copyright laws. There are quite a few online movie download sites that permit you to download free full version movies but they are illegal. It is of outmost importance to only download copyright free and piracy free movies.
The most effective way to ensure that you are downloading legal and “clean” movies, it to sign up for the well established Paid Online Movie Sites. Sure, they’re not fee however, for a small one time membership fee you can download unlimited full version versions - legally. You can even get access to the most current movies, games and music as well.
One of the problems I found with some of the free movie download sites, is that the movies are of low quality and the site download speed are slow. Paid movie download sites, on the other hand, offer superb quality movies and the download speed is much faster.
